Kilkerran Heavily Peated is a bold, limited-release single malt from Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, produced by Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd. Crafted using traditional methods such as floor maltings, direct-fired stills, and minimal intervention, this whisky showcases Campbeltown’s distinctive spirit style amplified by a heavy peat influence. Bottled at cask strength and usually released at a relatively young age, it delivers intense smoke while retaining balance, texture, and complexity. Maritime character, oily weight, and mineral depth underpin the profile, offering peat lovers a powerful yet nuanced alternative to more medicinal or sweetly smoky styles found elsewhere in Scotland.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose opens with dense peat smoke and smouldering embers, followed by clear maritime influences of sea spray, kelp, and coastal brine. Beneath the smoke sit bright notes of lemon peel and green apple alongside a malty sweetness, with gentle hints of vanilla custard and earthy herbs emerging as it opens.
Palate
On the palate the whisky arrives boldly, led by earthy peat and bonfire ash. An oily mouthfeel carries strong coastal salinity, balanced by citrus zest, cracked black pepper, and malt biscuit character. As it develops, notes of vanilla, charred oak, and light toffee add warmth and structure.
Finish
The finish is long, warming, and assertively smoky, with lingering peat embers, citrus oils, and a drying mineral edge. Salty notes remain alongside a restrained sweetness that fades slowly.
